Printing Details
First edition. Hardback, rebound for presentation in black velvet covered boards, with pierced filigree white metal mounts to borders and corners, and with white metal beehive, crest and motto (Learn of Us) mounted to upper board. Moire (watered silk) endpapers. 18.5 × 12.5cm, 264pp.
This copy was presented to the Lady Mayoress of London (Ada Louise White, she was the daughter of Sir Thomas White, Mayor of London) in 1877 on the occasion of her marriage. The inscription reads "To the Lady Mayoress on her Marriage with Cecil H T Price Esqre, August 9th, 1877. From Henry White, Treasurer of Sir John Cass's Schools, Ward of Portsoken. 26 Jewry Street EC, London, August 1877". Portsoken was one of the City of London's ancient wards (it contains Aldgate and Bishopsgate).
A book of household tips (much in the spirit of Mrs Beeton) giving advice on the running of a household, washing, cooking, clothing, recipes for ailments, poisons, duties of servants etc etc.
Condition
The wonderful binding is in good order, with tarnishing to the outer edge of the white metal, and few small patches of balding to the velvet but otherwise it remains in attractive and impressive condition. The contents are in good order with secure binding, but some foxing to the inscription page, and light age-relating toning to the text.
