This is a hand-illuminated and handwritten, framed and glazed original calligraphic artwork of a poem by Edgar Guest, created in December 1933 by E F Monck. The frame measures 36.5 × 30.5cm, and the poem is 25.5 × 20.5cm, The mount is gilt, and the frame has a gilt paint to it.
The poem has an illuminated title and initials, and in black ink calligraphy. This is bordered by intricate curlicues, swirls and foliate design, and on a delicate ink design of leaves and dots, with the corners backed in gilt.
There is a label to the rear which reads "This was done by your Mum when she was 43 for Auntie Millie. She and I would like you to have it. Mother, 12 March 1967", and a framer's label from Rugby in Warwickshire. Some brief online research shows this was Elizabeth Faith Monck (1891–1982) who stood for Mayor of Rugby in the late 1950s.
The poet, Edgar Guest, was born in Birmingham (UK), his family moved to Detroit in 1891, where he lived for the rest of his life. He was best known for his inspirational and optimistic poems of everyday life.
Condition
Good plus condition for age. There has been some damp damage to the right hand side and there is a raised ridge to the mount. There is a little tanning to the paper but the ink remains crisp. There are a few small knocks and scuffs to the frame. Overall, a very attractive piece.
