Printing Details
First edition. Two volumes (complete). Hardback, bound in burgundy cloth with gilt crest to upper board and (faint) gilt titling to spine. Each 24.5 × 15cm, ix + 508pp, vii + 405pp.
This copy belonged to a family member, Constance L M Hawtrey, who has signed both volumes, as well as annotating the family tree and made several marginal annotations throughout (usually in disagreement with what's been written).
A history of the Hawtrey family, from Elias / Helias of the King's Exchequer from the time of Henry II and whose family home was Chequers in Buckinghamshire (now the PM's country residence) through to the later Victorian period. The book is illustrated with portraits and a fold-out family tree.
Condition
Poor condition, this is a reference set. The cloth binding is heavily bumped and faded, with an unfortunate puncture to the rear board of volume 1. The contents are in fair readable condition, foxed but the binding is secure. As mentioned, family member's annotations throughout.
