Signed by Richard Mason, with three handwritten postcards and a typed letter signed
First edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 20.5 × 14cm, 383pp.
Signed and dedicated by Richard Mason to the ffep, "For Dr Elizabeth Lobl, who lived through the writing of this book, and who knows almost as well as the author how much went into it. With warmest regards, Richard Mason, Geneva, 15th August 1957". Also loosely inserted are three handwritten postcards and a typed letter signed from Richard Mason to Elizabeth Lobl. Dr Lobl was a pupil of Freud and escaped Vienna in 1938, coming to London via Switzerland (where she stayed with Hermann Hesse) and working as a renowned psychoanalyst from her home in Hampstead and rooms in Harley Street.
Richard Mason's timeless story of the love affair between a British artist and a Chinese prostitute. Robert is the only resident of the Nam Kok hotel not renting his room by the hour when he meets Suzie at the bar. She becomes his muse and they fall in love. But even in Hong Kong, where many white expatriates have Chinese mistresses, their romance could jeopardize the things they each hold dear. It was filmed in 1960 with William Holden and Nancy Kwan.
The book is in good plus condition with some bumping to the spine ends and corners. The inner binding is secure, the pages clean but with some tanning to the edges and margins. The dustwrapper has a small amount of loss to the head of the spine and along the edges, with a few small closed tears. It is slightly tanned to the spine and the edges of the rear panel. It has not been price-clipped and is now within a protective sleeve.Sold
