Shakespeare and his Betters
A History and a Criticism of the Attempts Which Have Been Made to Prove that Shakespeare’s Works Were Written by Others
First edition. Hardback in dustwrapper. 22 × 14cm, 255pp.
The text of this book is in two sections. The first gives a history of the anti-Stratfordian campaigns, the second is devoted to a thorough criticism of the main theories of the plays' authorship. He is particularly concerned to dispel the aristocratic illusion, which he believes is behind all the theories which have attributed the works to Bacon, the Earl of Oxford and others who were Shakespeare's social superiors.
The book is in very good condition. The dustwrapper a bit rubbed and faded to the spine.
