Proverbs in Scots
The James Carmichaell Collection from the original MS in Edinburgh University
First edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 23 × 14.5cm, vii + 149pp.
This collection of Proverbs in Scots, edited from the original MS in the Edinburgh University Library, contains 1637 proverbs, of which 648 are not to be found in contemporary or later collections. The compiler, as is proved in the introduction, was James Carmichaell, alumnus of St Andrews University, teacher, minister of St Mary's Paris, Haddington, witch-finder, grammarian, poet, and 'profound dreamer'. The collection dates from the first quarter of the 17th century.
The book is in very good condition, with some marking from the glue of the binding to the front pastedown. The dustwrapper is very good with a few small closed tears.
