Common Prayer (1855), with New Testament and Psalms (1851)
in a delightful wooden binding with gauffered edges
1851 / 1855. Small hardback. Leather spine with gilt titling, and bound with wooden boards and ornate brass corner and trim. Gauffered edges. 12 × 7.5 × 4cm. Unpaginated.
A delightful early Victorian Common Prayer (1855), New Testament and Psalms (both 1851) in superb (if incomplete) binding.
This book suffers three faults—25 pages (from signature B2) must have been come loose at some point and have been bound in at the beginning of the book, so it runs from B2 for 25 pages the onto the Common Prayer title page and the seventeen pages that would have preceded them, then back to the correct order. There would have been a clasp but this is missing and there are four small studs in the upper board suggesting there would have been another decoration there. However, it remains a thing of beauty. The brass has tarnished, there is wear to the page edges and general age-related wear but otherwise a nice item.Sold
