Printing Details
This is a sketchbook by an amateur artist in the 1920s. It is canvas bound with strong tie, and measures approximately 22.5 × 14.5cm, and consists of 30 pages, each of which has been used.
The artist has signed a few of the pieces, and is Guy Hemming Coltart (1874–1946), a surgeon from London.
Of the thirty pages, there are eleven horse studies (mostly watercolour but one or two in pencil), ten paintings of horse racing and equestrian pursuits (the artist has pencilled some names on a few of these, such as: Hurstwood 1924, Martin Robert, Sir Galahad III, 'Delay at the Post', Cesarewitch 927: St Reynard, Eagles Pride, Mr Jinks), there are seven landscapes or scenic views (such as Dymchurch, and 'Wimbledon Common at Sunset, March 7, 1926'), and two other sporting scenes: a lady tennis player in action, and a page of rough caricatures of jockeys, some named in pencil: F Fox, J Childs, G Richards etc).
The paintings are of good quality, with some of the paintings of horses' heads seem very good and well detailed.
Condition
There is some marking to the covers but this is otherwise in very good condition for age, with secure binding.
