A classic of 16th century Chinese literature, this new translation by Clement Egerton first published in 1939. It focuses on the domestic life of Hsi-men Ch'ing, a corrupt, upwardly mobile merchant in a provincial town, who maintains a harem of six wives and concubines. This work, known primarily for its erotic realism, is also a landmark in the development of the narrative art form-not only from a specifically Chinese perspective but in a world-historical context.
Condition
Good condition. The slipcase has some lifting to the covers, one area has been taped down but retains it structural integrity. The books are in strong readable condition, with some light foxing to the prelims, page edges and a little to the margins.
