Printing Details
First edition. Hardback, rebound in plain green binder's cloth with simple gilt titling to spine. 21.5 × 13.5cm, 546pp.
The military autobiography of Thomas Bland Strange, known as Gunner Jingo, and his service, travels and adventures in Gibraltar, Africa, Spain, Jamaica, India (including the Siege of Lucknow) and finally Canada where he served with the Canadian Militia, organising ordnance (he became known as the Father of Canadian Artillery) and raised a militia in the North-West Rebellion in 1885. The book is illustrated with a few of the author's drawings.
A previous owner's name to the ffep reads "Trench, Broomfield, Camberley" this was Colonel Charles Chevenix-Trench, who saw military service during the same time as Strange and was a near neighbour (Strange died in Camberley in 1925). Trench has made a few marginal notes in pencil.
Condition
A fair copy. As mentioned, the book has been rebound in fairly dulled green cloth which is a little faded to the spine and rubbed, and has a slight lean to the spine. The contents are in good readable condition, but the inner binding is strained at the title page and at a few other points but otherwise holding well. Slight age-related toning to the pages.
