The "cheap" edition was the first first trade edition of Apes of God, which had previously been published as a limited edition in 1930. Illustrated with occasional black and white drawings by Lewis, it is a satire on the artistic scene in London, particularly the Bloomsbury Group and the Sitwells. Tutored by a 60-year-old Albino dilettante, Dan travels through the London art world. He is horrified, confused and bored by the contrived "broadcasts" of the "apes", a series of pseudo artists who resemble, on the one hand, absurd mechanical dolls, and on the other, specific personages of the era.
The dustwrapper is a rare survival, illustrated by Wyndham Lewis, showing an ape with palette and paint brush.
Condition
The book is in good plus condition, there is some light tanning to the boards but the pages are clean and the binding secure. The dustwrapper is poor, sue to significant loss to the spine, with some lesser edgewear but the main front panel is in good order. It has not been price clipped and is now within a protective sleeve.
