The UK edition of The Sketch Book contains thirty-two essays and short stories (there were 34 in the American issue, with two further tales being added to the UK new edition of 1848). Of chief interest is the printing of two of Irving's most enduring tales: Rip Van Winkle, and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, both attributed to the fictional Dutch historian Diedrich Knickerbocker. The contents of volume one are: 1. The Author's Account of Himself, 2. The Voyage, 3. Roscoe, 4. The Wife, 5. Rip Van Winkle, 6. English Writers on America, 7. Rural Life in England, 8. The Broken Heart, 9. The Art of Book Making, 10. A Royal Poet, 11. The Country Church, 12. The Widow and her Son, 13. The Boar's Head Tavern, 14. The Mutability of Literature, 15. Rural Funerals, 16. The Inn Kitchen, 17. The Spectre Bridegroom, 18 Westminster Abbey. The contents of volume two are: 1. Christmas, 2. The Stage Coach, 3. Christmas Eve, 4. Christmas Day, 5. The Christmas Dinner, 6. Little Britain, 7. Stratford-on-Avon, 8. Traits of Indian Character, 9. Philip of Pokanoket, 10. John Bull, 11. The Pride of the Village, 12. The Angler, 13. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, 14. L'Envoy.
The Sketch Book was Irving's first use of his pen-name, Geoffrey Crayon
Condition
The leather is rubbed to corners, spines and spine ends of both volumes, and the joints are cracked (but still well attached). The inner bindings are secure, and there is only a small amount of light foxing to the pages, mostly to the prelims. A large corner of the ffep to volume 2 has been torn out, but the paper is still there and could be repaired. Overall, a good, readable copy of this early edition of Washington Irving's classic title.
