Here are five books on the eighteenth century artist and engraver William Hogarth and the times he lived in. Mixed bindings, three are from the library of Jill Spencer Allibone (1932–1998), an English architectural historian and the founder of the Mausolea and Monuments Trust.
1. Hogarth's Progress by Peter Quennell (Collins, London, 1955). First edition. Hardback in dustwrapper. The book itself IS in very good condition, the dustwrapper chipped at the spine ends with a small closed tear to the front panel.
2. England in the Age of Hogarth by Derek Jarrett (PBS / Book Club, 1974). First edition, hardback in dustwrapper. Light wear but otherwise very good.
3. Hogarth the Painter by Elizabeth Einberg (Tate Gallery, London, 1997). First edition. Slim paperback. Jill Allibone's handwritten name to inside front cover.
4. Hogarth and his Times by David Bindman (British Museum, London, 1997). Large paperback, very good but with a crease to the spine. Jill Allibone's handwritten name to inside front cover.
5. Manners and Morals; Hogarth and British Painting 1700–1760 (Tate Gallery, London, 1987. Large paperback, very good with single crease to spine. Bookplate of Jill Allibone to inside front cover. This copy with invite to the private view and a newspaper cutting pasted in to rear.
