This copy belonged to British architect James Stirling, and has his library label to the front pastedown. James Stirling (1926–1992) was known for his unorthodox, sometimes controversial, designs of multiunit housing and public buildings. His earlier work being in the New Brutalist style. Some of his notable works include the Leicester University Engineering Building, the History Faculty Building at the University of Cambridge, the Clore Gallery and the Neue Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart, Germany
A reprint of the 1926 first edition. Laurence Binyon's text discusses Blake as a participant in both the two great and divergent streams of engraving, reproductive engraving from the work of other artists, and the engraving of original designs, as well as the contribution represented in Blake's illuminated books and in illuminated printing, and finally on symbol and myth. This work remains the standard catalogue of Blake's original engravings. The text is followed by 82 pages of Blake's engravings, with one per page.
