This is an unused copy of a journal issued to midshipmen on ships to record their education, experience and service. The blank pages are simply title "HMS...… at..... Date....", with lined sheets below to record on. The instructions for use, opposite the title page, state that the journal is to be used to increase the young officer's powers of observation, expression and orderliness, noting fuelling, weather, descriptions of places visited, and all observations about their fleet and ship. It should be inspected by the Captain from time to time, and would be have to be produced at the examination in seamanship for the rank of Lieutenant.
Condition
This is an entirely blank copy, it has no entries at all, the pages are clean and the inner binding is secure. There is some grubby marking to the covers, and light water staining but overall this remains in good solid condition.
