Printing Details

First edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 20.5 × 14cm, 376pp.

"Here are four short novels—'short stories' would be a misnomer for tales of such vigour—by the author of The olive Field. Mr Bates has drawn on first hand experience of seafaring and of Spanish life to produce pictures which have all the richness and authenticity of his best work, and the relatively compact form has certainly not cramped the muscular power of his writing. In the longest story, which gives the book its title, the action takes place largely in the Aegean, where a strange group of outcasts are sponge-fishing. The background of The Other Land is Pimlico, that of Dead End of the Sky is the studio life of Paris and the South of France. And in Death of a Virgin Mr Bates gives us one of his characteristic paintings of Spanish village life, vivid, strange, and disturbing".

Condition

A good copy. The book has foxing to the page edges, and light intermittent foxing to the text pages but remains in strong readable condition. The dustwrapper has been neatly price-clipped, and with some light marking to the rear panel but is otherwise in good condition and is now within a protective sleeve.
