Early edition. Miniature book, small red cloth binding with ornate gilt decoration to spine and upper board. All edges gilt. 9.5 × 6.5cm, 128pp + 52pp.
Two titles bound into one. The first is 'Language and Poetry of Flowers' which has an alphabetical listing of flowers, giving a brief description, a theme, and a poem (eg Larkspur, Pink / Flowers blue, white and pink. A very handsome, showy blossom, easy of cultivation / Fickleness". The second section is an alphabetical list of flowers and what characteristic they represent (eg Amaryllis / Timidity), and a second index of human traits and what flower would represent that (eg Chivalry / Daffodil).
The book is illustrated with a frontispiece and title page printed in colours to a gold background.
Condition
A charming mid-Victorian pocket book. There is some rubbing and bumping to the red cloth, the book lacks the ffep and with a previous owner's name. There are a few marginal annotations not affecting text, and light foxing throughout but the books remaining in good readable condition.
