First thus. Hardback, rebound in half-leather with green moire covered boards. Five raised bands and contrasting title label to spine. Page edges decorated with speckled dye. 17 × 10.5cm, 584pp.
This book collects all 58 of Francis bacon's essays, originally published between 1597 and 1625, arranged into six sections and replicating the original title pages for each edition they essays appeared in. Also with "The Fragment of an an Essay, of Fame". The introductory text contains Dr Rawley's Life of Lord Bacon, Ben Jonson's Testimony, Aubrey's Gossip, a contemporary and later bibliography, and a "list of texts comprised in this Harmony".
Edward Arber was a scholarly editor and his English Reprints series (1868–1871) ran to thirty books which made available sixteenth and seventeenth century texts which had only been accessible by looking at original and early printed copies.
Condition
This copy is in very good condition. The rebinding has been done to a very high standard and includes new endpapers. There is some very light scuffing to the spine and the title page has light spotted foxing. There is some mild tanning throughout but this copy remains in very good and strong readable condition.
