Printing Details

First edition, hardback. Limited to 290 copies, this being number 82. Paper covered boards with title label pasted down to upper board. 24 × 15cm, unpaginated (it's a 3pp poem).

This copy has been signed by Edith Sitwell to the limitation page. It has also been signed by the illustrator Edward Carrick who added his name later—a handwritten letter from Carrick written under his birth name of Edward Craig states he is happy to sign the book for the recipient. Carrick changed his name from Craig to escape the controlling tyranny of his father, the stage designer Edward Gordon Craig, who disagreed with his career path and choice of wife.

A poem by Edith Sitwell on Spring and rebirth, with illustrated title page, and two further woodcuts by Carrick.

The poem was printed for, and dedicated to, Terence Fytton Armstrong, the real name of John Gawsworth, the British poet, publisher and King of Redonda. He also published three other seasonal poems: In Winter (W H Davies), In Summer (Edmund Blunden) and In Autumn (Herbert Palmer).

Condition

The covers are in poor condition. The paper over the spine and fragmented and is badly chipped. There is a dry water-stain to the top and bottom of the fore-edge of the front board (though this is not visible to the inside covers). The contents are in good condition, a little tanned but otherwise in strong readable condition.
