Printing Details

Hardback, rebound into two volumes, professionally rebound in burgundy cloth with typed labels to spine. Each 26.5 × 17.5cm (width of both books together 16cm). xxxix + 1800pp, pp1801–3479, + 152pp ads. Fore-edge with printed easy-access index.

A remarkable genealogical resource and reference book. This is the Post Office directory for London for the year 1906, containing alphabetical listings officials, Royals, governments, streets (from Abbey Court in St John's Wood to Zetland Street in Poplar), commercial listings from the A1 Co-Operative Shipping and Tourist Society to Zygad Duplicator Co of Lyme Street, NW), and a trade directory (from absorbent cotton wool manufacturers to zincographic printers), as well as such official information as civil servants, solicitors, patent officers, clerical, telegraphs and telephones, banking, conveyance etc etc, including Winston Churchill as the MP for Oldham (this was the year he lost the seat). The book finishes with 152 pages of adverts from London, the UK and Global businesses. There are also some adverts at the beginning of volume one, but these have been mostly removed to balance the rebinding.

Condition

The books have been well rebound though there is some light wear to the the burgundy cloth. The typed label to the spines are a little tanned, and there are also two reference numbers to the spine. The contents are in good condition for age. The text is printed on India paper and is thin and prone to creasing. There is corner creasing throughout, and the small amount of adverts to volume one, title page and introduction have heavier creasing than elsewhere in the book, and the title page has had some professional repair when rebound. However, the main body of text is in strong readable condition and is a wealth of information on London in 1906. A heavy set at about 5kg+.
