From the dustwrapper, "This quietly moving novel of an English village tells the story of a rector's daughter with socialistic ideals which are not translated satisfactorily into action; of the love she inspires in a labourer's son, who is loved in turn by the Rectory handmaid; of the dignity and courage of this little servant, the hurt bewilderment of the labouring lad, and the sublime indifference of the young lady who has caused all the trouble. Behind these protagonists stands the saintly and earnest rector, trying vainly to shepherd them into the ways of peace. There is an austere beauty about everything that Miss Doreen Wallace writes, and the very simplicity of her story makes it a thing of enduring loveliness."
