Robert Emmet Kennedy was born in Gretna, Louisiana, and through his life he was fascinated by the "Negro spirituals" and the dialect of the people living in East Green, an African American community in Gretna. This book is a collection of transcriptions of stories, songs and poetry from African-American life in Southern Louisiana, some given to the author from his family's servants. There are decorations throughout the book by Edward Larocque Tinker, a New York author who wrote extensively on the culture and history of the city of New Orleans.

Condition

A good plus copy. There is some rubbing to the cloth, and some of the design is wearing off. There is one small stain to the upper board but the main body of text is in string readable condition, and this is a scarce title to find signed.
