Undated, 1842/1843. Hardback, six volumes (of eight). Rebound in attractive painted half-calf binding, with contrasting leather title labels to spine, marbled page edges. Each 24.5 × 16.5cm, please see below for pagination.
An attractive part set of Shakespeare, lacking only the Histories. The rebinding makes them a very decorative set. The books here are:
1. Tragedies (in two volumes), also containing Shakespeare's Poems. 471pp + 360pp, 175pp, xvii.
2. Comedies (in two volumes). 456pp + 453pp.
3. Biography. Dated 1843. 544pp.
4. Doubtful Plays. 495pp. This contains Titus Anfronicus, Pericles, and The Two Noble Knismen, as well as the fourteen plays ascribed to Shakespeare but are now considered part of the Shakespeare Apocrypha.
Condition
An attractive and decorative set. There is some light scuffing to the boards and the books have a little bit of a musty odour. There is a previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown of most volumes, and a slightly scruffy appearance to the pastedowns, but the books remain in strong readable condition. The pages are clean bar some isolated areas of foxing, tanning or marking, and the inner binding are secure.
This is a heavy set at 7kg.
