Undated, c1932. First edition, in later state wrapper. Hardback in dustwrapper. 24 × 15.5cm, 384pp.
The memoirs of Langton Prendergast Walsh, First Administrator of Somaliland. He entered the Marine Postal Service in 1873, and then transferred to the Bombay Political Service in 1879. He was present at Kassassin and Tel-el-Kebir. In 1883–1892, he served in N E Africa, during which period he raised the Somali Coast Protectorate Police for operations against the Jibril Abuker tribes, and then served as political agent across Africa. This memoir also records his meeting with Sir Richard Burton and General Gordon.
A good reading copy. The book has spotted foxing to the prelims and page edges, with some small areas of mottled fading to the board's edges, and some bleeding of the blue dye to the pastedowns. Water splash marks to the pages' top edge. The dustwrapper is poor, with several large chips and tears to the edges but is now within a protective sleeve.
