First edition. Stiff card covers, French flaps. 29 × 22cm, 176pp.
A book of Hammershoi's beautiful paintings to accompany the exhibition at the Royal Academy in London in 2008. The book is illustrated with works spanning all stages of Hammershoi's career, with numerous little known photographs of the artist, his family and apartments. Intriguing essays and detailed catalogue entries by leading scholars explore the singularity of the artist's vision, examining his links with the Dutch masters of the seventeenth century and the painters of the early nineteenth century Danish Golden Age, and placing his achievement in the context of fin-de-siecle Symbolist art.
