Printing Details

First edition. Hardback, bound in full green leather with gilt titling to spine and upper board. All edges gilt This specially bound edition limited to 100 copies, this being no 42 (the whole print run was 500).

This copy has been signed by Alun Lewis's widow, Gweno Lewis (Mrs Alun Lewis). It has been first signed by her in 1946 from her home in Aberystwyth (Chateau, Bryn Road) to a family member, Anne S Ellis (Gweno's maiden name), and secondly to the front pastedown again by Gweno to Anne and Jeremy Powell in 1994. Anne Powell was am anthologist, author and historian of the First and Second World Wars.

This book presents a selection of poet Alun Lewis's poems from India where he was serving in the British Army in the Burma campaign. The letters mention his daily life, poems and publishings but Gweno Lewis notes that she has left out certain intimate details. There are two facsimile pages of letters. Alun Lewis, who was suffering from depression, died in Burma in 1944. It is commonly believed he took his own life but the military court charitably decided it was an accident.

Condition

The spine is faded and there is light, scattered foxing throughout but otherwise this is a good, solid copy.
