This copy from the library of Professor Morton N Cohen, the pre-eminent Lewis Carroll scholar, with his signature to the ffep, along with an annotation that there is mention of Alice in Wonderland, pp177–178.
The author, Ethel Maud Rowell, was a mathematician at the Royal Holloway College, University of London, and this is her highly regarded collection of essays, all written pre-war. As she writes in her preface, "And proceeding as they do from a spacious pre-war world of academic work and leisure, they may afford, in their own small degree, a release of mind and an amplitude of thought not always easy to come by in these clamant and constricted days of war."
The essays in this book range over subjects such as self, knowledge, religion, art, literature etc (with the Alice in Wonderland reference coming from 'The Scepticism of the Mathematician"). Condition
The book is in very good condition, with a little age-related toning to the pages but clean and securely bound. The dustwrapper is edgeworn with surface abrasions to the front and back but remaining in good condition. The wrapper not price-clipped.
