This slim book accompanied an exhibition at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting & Sculpture in 2008. As well as the introductory essay, it carries 15 drawings from Peter de Francia. In Ashton's essay she places de Francia within a humanistic tradition of draftsmen as freedom fighters stretching from Goya to Guttuso, via Beckmann, Picasso and Grosz. There are shades, too, of a distinctly British tradition of caricature, of Hogarth and Rowlandson, in de Francia’s pointed social satire.
