First edition. Hardback in dustwrapper. 26 × 18.5cm, 223pp.
A privately published book of extracts from the Great War diary of Captain Wilfrid Saxby Barham, kept during the first twelve months of the war (he died of shrapnel wounds received at Poperinghe in October 1915). There is a brief introduction covering his early life and the coming of the war, and the diary is illustrated with drawings, photographs and maps. The book also includes some of his letters to his parents, and description of the monuments erected in his memory. The original diary is now in the Imperial War Museum, and this gives a fascinating insight into a young officer's life on the Western Front at the beginning of World War One.
