"During the First World War and its immediate aftermath France completed the second largest empire in world history. New territories came to her from the break up of both the German Empire in Africa and of the Ottoman Empire in the Middle East. The climax of French empire-building has never before been fully analysed, and it makes a remarkable story." Here, the authors show how France lost control of imperial policy (even in Paris), and how it underestimated the Zionism and Arab nationalism, and the complex Anglo-French manoeuvring for imperial power.
