Kelly's Directory of Hampshire, Wiltshire and Dorsetshire 1895
Professionally rebound, with three maps
Hardback, rebound in plain red binder's cloth with tgilt titling to spine, with new endpapers and pastedowns. 27 × 17.5cm. xxxiv, 996pp, 376pp, 314pp, with 52pp ads.
This is an original copy of the 1895 Kelly's Directory for three counties of Hampshire (including the Isle of Wight), Wiltshire and Dorsetshire. Each county has a brief physical description, followed by the council officers, geology, and magistrates. Then there is a gazetteer of the county, listing each town, village and city alphabetical, and also including residents of importance. Some of the more major places have a street and resident index (eg Portsmouth, Southampton etc), this is followed by a court directory and a trades directory.
All three counties have a map (all three are present). The maps are printed on India paper and as such are rather delicate. The book has the counties' names printed to the fore-edge for ease of reference.
The book has been rebound to a high standard and the inner binding is secure, with new endpapers and pastedowns. There is professional binder's taped repair where there is loss to the inner margin to the title page and preface but the main body of text is in very good order for age. Of the maps: Hampshire is in good / fair condition, Wiltshire is poor, with a tear along the central fold, Dorset is fair, having been folded back carelessly and has a 12cm where bound in. Overall, a good copy for age, and an important genealogical reference.Sold
