In England My Adventure, Ethel Mannin relates places to people, thus she went to Bedford for Bunyan, to Lichfield for Dr Johnson, to St Ives for the distinguished potter Bernard Leach, and to Nottingham for D H Lawrence. She went to Lindisfarne for the saints who made it Holy Island, and to Wigan 'to see how it was doing' after Orwell's grim picture of the thirties. She travelled to Haworth to investigate what she calls the 'Bronte industry', she went to Selborne not only for Gilbert White but for the Edward Thomas country beyond; Canterbury was the gateway to Conrad's Bishopsbourne, and Portland bound up with Hardy and Tomlinson.
This copy is good condition, but the contents pages have become neatly detached. The dustwrapper has been price-clipped but is now within a protective sleeve.
