Printing Details

First edition. Hardback, bound in the original blue cloth with gilt titling to spine. 23 × 15cm, 300pp + 4pp ads.

This copy belonged to James Ira Thomas "Taffy" Jones, DSO, MC, DFC & Bar, MM, a British flying ace during the First World War. He has signed it four times (pastedown, ffep, half-title and title page, the last as J Ira Jones 2Lt, RAF). He flew with 74 Squadron and notched up 37 victories. He flew briefly during the Battle of Britain and one of his more notable adventures was when he saw of a Junkers 88 with a Very pistol whilst flying an unarmed Hawker Henley. There are also a smattering of marginal notes, and a second previous owner's bookplate (W D Clark of Talygarn).

The wartime memoirs of General Falkenhayn, the German army Chief of Staff from 1914 to 1916, where he oversaw actions on both the Eastern Front and the Western Front. The book is illustrated with sic fold out maps and five within the text.

Condition

A fair copy. The blue cloth is rubbed and marked, and the hinges are cracked but not detached. The pages are clean if a little tanned in places but the main body of text is well-bound. As mentioned there are a few pencil annotations to the margins, but Ira Jones' ownership make this a rare copy. All maps are present.
