A memoir by Ida Cook, better known as the romantic novelist Mary Burchell. Ida and her sister, Louise, were frequent travellers to Germany in the 1930s being great fans of opera. In fact, they used these trips to help 29 Jewish people to escape Nazi Germany. It was a remarkable and dangerous feat and in 1965 they were honoured as Righteous Among the Nations (an honorific used by the State of Israel to describe non-Jews who risked their lives during the Holocaust). The love of opera was genuine and Ida Cook counted Amelita Galli-Curci, Rosa Ponselle and Maria Callas among her close friends.
A good reading copy. The boards are a bit dulled with a little fraying to the front hinge at the base of the spine but the contents are in good order with clean pages and secure binding. Slight lean to spine.
