This copy comes from the library of Swami Vidyatmananda, and has been signed by Christopher Isherwood to him (as Prema) to the title page, "for Prema, affectionately from Chris. May 22 1957". Vidyatmananda was John Yale (1913–2000, also known as Prema Chaitanya) an American who found faith in Hinduism. He corresponded frequently with Isherwood, and Isherwood wrote the introduction to his "What Religion Is: In the Words of Swami Vivekananda". He was also the editor of Vedanta and the West. John Yale has numerous appearances in the book and index. Provenance: Trevanion and Dean (Whitchurch) from Swami Vidyatmananda's Paris library.
A collection short stories with an introduction by Isherwood. The authors include: Joseph Conrad, G K Chesterton, George Moore, H G Wells, E M Forster, Rudyard Kipling, D H Lawrence, Katherine Mansfield, Ethel Colburn Mayne, Robert Graves, W Somerset Maugham, V S Pritchett and William Plomer.
The book is in fair condition. The spine is sun-faded and creased and the pages are tanned throughout. The binding is secure but there is a water stain to the inside rear cover.
