Past Events 1880
A monthly record of events in Newcastle and the North East, with ephemera connected to the author, Fred Gosman
First edition, hardback (rebound in quarter cloth with marbled paper covered boards and simple gilt titling to spine). 19 × 12.5cm, 196pp.
Not signed as such but this copy contains two printed letters of a poem celebrating the author's silver wedding anniversary (1882), a carte de visite of the author, and a memorial card in loving memory of Gosman. There are also three previous owner's bookplates, one of which is for R W Benton of Longbenton in Northumberland.
An interesting month by month account of 1880 taken from the local papers of North East England, but also stretching to other areas. The book is bound with with the original coloured paper covers. For example Jan 1st reports a fire at the Neville Glass Works in Gateshead, Feb 6th has Messrs R & W Hawthorn's tram-engine successfully running all day on the North Road, Feb 9th a skiff race over the Tyne was run by William Elliott of Blyth and Robert Watson Boyd of Middlesbro', August 13 three railway men who were killed at the accident near Berwick on the 10th were buried, and Nov 12th a party of labourers and Orangemen, harvested crops under the escort of the dragoons and constabulary at Lough Mask House.
This copy is in good condition for age. The boards are rubbed and bumped and the original covers that have been bound in are a bit tatty but the inner binding is secure and the book remains in strong readable condition.
