Printing Details

First edition, second impression. Hardback in dustwrapper. 19 × 12.5cm, 193pp [2].

This copy has a gift inscription from Ethel Mannin, the British novelist, to a friend of hers and dated 1942.

From the wrapper, "Lord Berners has written a story about an identifiable University town in wartime [Oxford]. Emmeline, the central figure of the story, is the daughter of the Warden of All Saints. The noises of the outside world distressed this sensitive girl because they obliged her to think. So she built for herself a sound-proof room in order not to have to think at all."

The book is in good readable condition but foxed to the first few pages and to the page edges. The dustwrapper has slight loss to the spine ends and some tanning to the spine as well as overall tanning but has not been price-clipped and is now within a protective sleeve.
