Life of Robert, Marquis of Salisbury
Complete in four volumes (1921–32), by his daughter Lady Gwendolen Cecil
1921—1932. First edition. Four volumes (complete). Hardbacks bound in the original brown cloth with title label to spine. Each 23 × 14.5cm. viii + 353pp, vi + 390pp, viii + 352pp, vi +413pp.
Lady Gwendolen Cecil's four volume biography of her father, Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury, the British statesman who served as prime minister three times for a total of over thirteen years. He acted as his own foreign minister. He avoided alignments or alliances, maintaining the policy of "splendid isolation." Quite scarce in the complete set.
Each volume has some degree of wear and foxing so this is sold as a good reading set. The inner bindings are secure but the books have light foxing throughout with vol 4 being the worst. There are some inoffensive pencil marginal annotations, and volume 2 has a bookplate of a Henry Sydney Seymour. The books remain in readable condition.
