The Charm of Birds
1927, rebound in half-leather by Henry Sotheran Ltd.
First edition. Hardback, rebound in half-leather by Henry Sotheran Ltd with five raised bands and gilt decoration to spine. Top edge gilt. 22 × 14.5cm, xii + 243pp
Since its publication on 1927, The Charm of Birds was an immediate popular success. It deals mostly, but not exclusively, with birdsong, and is full of sensitive observation, beautifully written. Unlike most works of ornithology, it can be read for the pleasure of its prose alone. Illustrated with fine woodcuts by Robert Gibbings.
An attractive copy but quite worn. The leather is chipped to the joints, spine ends and corners, and the hinges are a little strained. There is some light scattered foxing to the pages but the book remains in strong readable condition. There is a 1960s previous owner's gift inscription to the ffep.
