The Basement Room and Other Stories
1935, first printing and the basis of The Fallen Idol
First edition, first printing. Hardback, bound in the original red cloth boards with printed titling to spine. 19 × 12.5cm, 165pp.
A collection of eight short stories by Graham Greene, with The Basement Room being the basis of the 1948 film The Fallen Idol. Greene wrote the story on a long journey back from Liberia in 1935 after collecting information for his Journey without Maps. The stories included are: 1. The Basement Room, 2. The End of the Party, 3. I Spy, 4. Brother, 5. Jubilee, 6. A Chance for Mrs Lever, 7. Proof Positive, and 8. A Day Saved (a story specially written for broadcasting).
The spine is a faded, with a little fading and minor bumping to the boards. There is a slight forward lean to the spine but the book is free from inscription and the pages are clean. There is some foxing to the pages' top edge and fore-edge, and a booksellers sticker to the rear pastedown has offset to the rear endpaper. Otherwise a very good copy in good solid shape.
