Expositions of the Cartoons of Raphael
1868, full leather with seven tipped in photographs
New Edition. Full leather binding blocked in gilt with "Bromley Science and Art Classes" (it was awarded as a prize to Miss A. L. Webber in 1874). Gilt decoration, five raised bands and contrasting title label to spine. Page edges marbled. 20.5 × 15cm, 99pp + 1pp ad.
A study of seven pieces by Raphael: 1. The Miraculous Draught of Fishes, 2. The Charge to Peter, 3. Peter and John Healing the Lame Man at the Beautiful Gate of the Temple, 4. The Death of Ananias, 5. The Conversion of Sergius Paulus, 6. Paul and Barnabas Rejecting the Sacrifice at Lystra, and 7. Paul Preaching at Athens. The works were tapestries, and each one is presented here in a sepia photograph, quite an early example of art photography in books.
A good copy with wear. The leather rubbed and scuffed but remains attractive. The contents are in good order with some light foxing and tanning to the pages. All photographs are present, though they have suffered some degree of fading.
