Printing Details
This is an attractive hand-coloured map of the Bishopprick of Durham, dating from 1617. It is framed and glazed. The Hogarth frame measures 21.5 × 16.5, the mount aperture is 12.5 × 9cm.
This is one of a series of small maps by Peter Van Den Keere (Dutch, 1571—1646) used to illustrate a Latin pocket edition of Camden's Britannia, Viri Clarissimi Britannia (Amsterdam, 1617). The map shows all the major towns of County Durham bordered by Westmoreland, Northumberia and Eboracensis (York). The map has been rather boldy hand-coloured at a later date.
Condition
This map is in very good condition, with just a little age-related tanning. The framing has been done professionally.
