Waterways and Water Transport in Different Countries
with a Description of the Panama, Suez, Manchester, Nicaraguan, and Other Canals
First edition, first printing. Hardback, bound in the original blue cloth with gilt titling to spine and upper board. 22 × 13.5cm, xx + 506pp.
An uncommon first edition on water transport. The first section deals with waterways of different countries (English rivers and canals, Scotland, European countries, Russia, Canada, United States, India etc), the second section is on specific canals (Suez, Panama, Nicaraguan, Manchester Ship, Isthmus of Corinth and the Thames), and the third section is on the transport, working and management of canals and waterways (locks, tunnels, viaducts, traffic, boats etc). The book has appendices on 1. chronology of river improvement and canal navigation in England up to 1852, 2. canals in England, Wales and Scotland, under the control of railway companies, 3. through routes of canal and inland navigation in England and Wales, 4. Statement of the canals in the UK owned or controlled by railway companies on 31st December 1882, 5. the principal river systems or Europe and America. The book has a frontispiece of Newton Cutting on the Birmingham canal, and is illustrated with maps and diagrams within the text.
The book is in very good shape, with secure binding and clean pages. The blue cloth has spotted faded and staining to the top 6cm or so of the spine and to the upper board. Light bumping to the corners and edges but otherwise a very good copy.
