Cumberland and Westmorland, Ancient and Modern
The People, Dialect, Superstitions and Customs (1857)
First edition, hardback bound in the original cloth with gilt titling to spine. 23 × 14.5cm, 171pp.
A study of Cumberland and Westmorland (now Cumbria), from its ancient inhabitants, Celtic and Roman migrations, the people, dialect and literature, as well as superstitions and customs (apparitions, fairies, giants, fireworship etc).
A good reading copy. The cloth is damaged to the spine with one small chunk missing (this is tucked in at the title page), and with fraying and loss to the joints and spine ends. The pages are tanned throughout but the inner binding is holding.
