The first of Thompson's Indian novels and is the story of Vincent Hamar, a judge in the Civil Service who is deeply fond of India and sympathetic to Indians. He is sent to a small place called Vishnugram as a punishment after refusing to jail some Swarajists where he meets two missionaries, Alden and Findley, who share his love of Indian thought and philosophy.
