The Story of St. Patrick's Purgatory
The first American edition
First US edition. Hardback, bound in green cloth with (faded) gilt titling to upper board. 19 × 12.5cm, 78pp.
A series of tales collected by Shane Leslie about St Patrick and Lough Derg in County Donegal. Legend says that it was here St. Patrick spent forty days and nights in prayer and fasting and faced many temptations. In the end, he was given a vision of Purgatory that he might share with the Irish people. Leslie writes in his brief introductory note "The first story is of the nature of an allegory. The second and third I gleaned from the spirit of of old Celtic monasteries... the others are more historical, for the visions of Owen were in most libraries of the Middle Ages, and the expulsion of the canons is remembered yet in the people's tradition."
This copy is in very good condition for age. As mentioned the gilt titling to the front cover is faded and there is some light fading to the rear board along the joint. The contents are in good order bar some scattered foxing to the prelims and some surface wear to the hinges.
