Last Words in the Parish Church in Doncaster
19 sermons by C J Vaughan
First edition, hardback bound in half-leather with five raised bands and gilt titling to spine. 17 × 11.5cm, 328pp.
A series of 19 sermons written by Charles John Vaughan who had been Vicar of Doncaster from 1860 to 1869, when he was appointed Master of the Temple. He had been headmaster at Harrow but was forced to resign by John Addington Symonds senior to avoid a scandal after an affair with one of the boys. Vaughan then became Bishop of Rochester but again had to resign having promised Symonds not to hold high office, and could only take up a position again once Symonds has died.
A good copy, the leather is rubbed and there is a small reference number written to the base of the spine. The contents are in good readable condition, but some pages with underlining in ink, and a previous owner's inscription.
