This copy has been signed by Salvador de Madariaga to Jose Castillejo, a Spanish jurist and educationalist.
Madariaga's biographical study of Hernan Cortes, the Spanish Conquistador who led an expedition that caused the fall of the Aztec Empire and brought large portions of what is now mainland Mexico under the rule of the King of Castile in the early 16th century. Cortés was part of the generation of Spanish colonizers who began the first phase of the Spanish colonization of the Americas.
The author was a Spanish diplomat and pacifist. He went into exile to England during the Spanish Civil War where he was a vocal opponent of Franco. He died in Oxford in 1978.
The book and dustwrapper are in very good condition for age, with just a little wear to the wrapper's edges and some tanning to the pages.
