Full title: A Sure Guide to Heaven; or an Earnest Invitation to Sinners to turn to God, in Order to their Eternal Salvation. Shewing the Thoughtful Sinner what he must do to be Saved. Bound with The Grounds and Principles of Christian Religion, contained in a Short Catechism. With Proofs thereof our of the Scriptures.
Joseph Alleine (1634–1668) was an English Nonconformist pastor who authored many theological books. His Sure Guide to Heaven (1688) was a reprinting of part of his best known work, An Alarme to Unconverted Sinners (1672) and is considered a major work on conversion and salvation, and to be one of the greatest evangelical books ever written influencing the work of preachers such as George Whitefield and Charles Spurgeon. This copy has a short work, The Grounds and Principles of Christian Religion (London, 1687) also bound in.
This is a poor copy of a rare title. Both boards are detached and the leather is lacking to most of the spine, with the string binding exposed. Previous owner's handwriting to the front pastedown and final page of text. The pages with foxing throughout but remaining readable and the inner binding holding. The pages are egdeworn. The secondary piece bound in is in worn condition, with some marginal loss to text to the last two pages but again remains readable. The rear board lacks the pastedown. Overall, a rare survival of a scarce and important title but one that has suffered fro the ravages of time.
