Publii Terentii Cathaginiensis Afro Comoedia Sex
Terence's plays, published in 1736 by Westminster College
First thus, hardback bound in full leather (possibly was speckled but the acid used in the process has left surface marks to the boards). 19.5 × 12.5cm, 316pp + index. Latin text.
This edition was printed under the auspices of Westminster College by J Bettenham for B Barker, and contains all six of Terence's plays: Andriae, Eunuchi, Heaut, Adelphi, Hecyra, and Phormio. These are preceded by a dedication to Lionel (Sackville), Duke of Dorset and a life of the author. The book has Westminster College's printed crest to the title page and an engraved crest to the dedication.
The leather is in quite heavily worn condition as mentioned, with pitted marks over the boards. The leather is also rubbed to the spine exposing the cord on one raised band and surface loss to the rear joint. The contents, however, are in good clean condition with secure binding. And as a nice touch, a previous owner has annotated the first page of the plays with the note "Begun June 24th, 1791"
